Backcountry Access Alpine Trekker Review

Alpine Trekker

Alpine Trekkers offer a cheaper way to outfit skis with downhill bindings for backcountry skiing. The Alpine Trekkers work very similar to traditional Alpine Touring or Randonee bindings, except they use the existing bindings. On the uphill touring you snap the trekker into the bindings, then strap your boot onto the trekker. For the descent, you remove the trekker from your boot and from the ski, then use the ski just like you would for downhill skiing.

REI SubKilo +20 Sleeping Bag Review

subkilo.gif

The REI SubKilo Sleeping Bag gets it’s name from the weight of the bag. It only weighs .91 kilograms or about 2 lbs. As you can see from the picture below, this sleeping bag packs up to be about twice the size of a Nalgene bottle. It’s a little tight around my shoulders (I’m about 6 ft. with a 44” chest), but I expect that with a mummy bag. I got the long version so I have room to curl up in the bag. The standard version of the sleeping bag will fit heights up to 6 feet.

Karhu Jak Backcountry

Karhu BC90

The Karhu Jak Backcountry is a light weight version of the popular Jak. In order to save weight, without giving up performance, Karhu replaced the Titanal with carbon fiber, and the maple core with Greenlight, an environmentally friendly core. The Jak BC weights nearly a pound less than the regular Jak. The weight savings makes touring a breeze. Click here for my Jak review.
