Utah
Canyonland National Park preserves a colorful landscape eroded into countless canyons, mesas and buttes by the Colorado River, the Green River and their tributaries. The rivers divide the park into four districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze and the rivers themselves. While these areas share a primitive desert atmosphere, each retains its own character and offers different opportunities for exploration. There are no roads that directly link each district, so getting to each district will take some driving time on paved highways. |

Located just outside of Moab, Utah, on the red cliffs overlooking the Colorado River, Arches National Park is a geologic wonderland. These Arches formed over millions of years of erosion. If you'd like to escape the summer heat of the Salt Lake Valley, and entertain and educate your kids while you're at it, you can take this short hike at the base of Alta Ski Area. Take the first Alta entrance you get to off the Little Cottonwood Canyon road. It's called the Wildcat Base. You'll see a large parking lot once you go down a short hill. Park near the Gold Miner's Daughter building. |

Zion National Park is characterized by high plateaus, a maze of narrow, deep sandstone canyons and striking rock towers and mesas. Geologic processes have played an important role in shaping Zion. The arid climate and sparse vegetation allow the exposure of large expanses of bare rock that have created scenic canyons with sandstone cliffs ranging in color from cream, to pink, to red. |

For those rambling cross country in a motor home, you would do well to stop in Moab Utah at the KOA (a national chain) or Moab Valley RV Resort. Both of these campgrounds accommodate full hook-ups for motor homes, have tent sites and cabins to rent to visitors to Moab, Utah and the surrounding National Parks. |

Cataract Canyon in Canyonlands National Park serves up 28 Grand Canyon Style rapids. It is one hundred miles of the Colorado River from Moab, Utah to Lake Powell.
