Top Five Hikes in Acadia National Park
You'll want to keep several things in mind when hiking Acadia National Park. First, there's the usual hiking procedures every smart hiker should do, including: bring plenty of snacks, loads of water, a durable pair of hiking boots, an extra pair of socks, a map, and camera with extra batteries. Also remember to know your own limits while hiking and not to exceed them. Secondly, keep park rules and regulations in mind when hiking on their property. For example, here are some of Acadia's regulations: do not feed or disturb wildlife, stay on the marked trail, do not harm any plants of vegetation, fires are not permitted, take care of your trash and waste, bikes are not allowed on the trails, and pets must be on a leash. Before anyone does hike in the park they should go to the Information Center at Park Headquarters, or reach them beforehand at (207)288.3338 for additional park information or any general questions. Detailed topographic trail information (including trail begin/end points) can also be found here, as well as historic information regarding the area.
Mileage Accounts for a round trip.
Cadillac Mountain - The parks most popular attraction, Cadillac Mountain, offers several trails to the outdoor enthusiast, all of which offer breath-taking views of the surrounding area. The North Ridge Trail and South Ridge Trail approach Cadillac's summit from different angles and at different slopes. The North Ridge Trail, 4.4 miles of hiking, has a moderate slope with some steep areas—take a peek behind you and gaze at the beautiful view of Bar Harbor and Frenchman Bay stretching out below. The South Ridge Trail is longer and more gently sloped, covers over 7 miles in distance, and offers a superior sight of the Cranberry Isles.
Precipice Trail - Climb iron rungs, walk along cliffs, and enjoy breath-taking views offered by one of the park's most popular and strenuous trails. Certainly an aggressive workout, this ladder trail is perfect for the hiker seeking a challenging climb. Although intimidating, it's similar to other difficult trails in another regard: reaching the end of it rewards you with the ecstasy of completing the ascent. Children are highly discouraged, pets are forbidden. 1.6 miles.
The Beehive - This is a solid exercise with plenty of spots along the way to enjoy the scenery. It is a ladder trail .8 miles long, incredibly steep, and a work-out for the whole body. For scenic opportunities, you will overlook the eastern shore of the island and have a great overhead angle to observe Sand Beach. Children are highly discouraged, pets are forbidden. Rated strenuous.
Ocean Path - Traveling from Sand Beach to Otter Cliff, this easy-going walk provides 3 miles of encompassing beauty. Treat your eyes to the beautiful coast of Mount Desert Island. Along your way, stop at Thunder Hole to witness the noise and power behind each wave of the ocean as it slams hard against rocky Mount Desert coastline.
Great Head Trail - Just off the Park Loop Road, take a venture to enjoy remarkable sights of nearby cliffs, Sand Beach, and the Beehive. Get the camera ready for a stunning shot of pink granite cliffs! This 1.5 trail is rated moderate and suitable for the single hiker or whole family.Â
