Acadia National Park Introduction
Acadia National Park is made up of a cluster of islands encompasses 45,000 acres on the rugged coast of Maine. Acadia National Park is mostly surrounded by the ocean, but it also hosts a wide variety of freshwater, estuarine, forest, and intertidal habitats, and includes the highest point on the U.S. Atlantic coast, Cadillac Mountain, standing at 1,530 feet.
Variety is the key word when referring to the natural features of Acadia National Park. While many parks have been established to highlight and protect a very specific natural feature, visitors to Acadia experience a wide diversity of ecosystems and biological communities. Ocean, mountains, lakes and streams, wetlands, forests, meadows, and beaches are all found within Acadia, and each feature makes its unique contribution to the natural tapestry.
Outdoor Activities
Visitors come to Acadia to hike granite peaks, bike historic carriage roads, or relax and enjoy the scenery, with the average visitor spending three to four days in the area.
Some favorite activities in the park include the 20-mile Park Loop Road, which provides views of ocean, mountains, and forests. A popular side trip is the 3.5-mile road up to Cadillac Mountain, where there is a 1/3-mile loop trail for hiking. In addition, there are 125 miles of hiking trails through forest and mountain terrain and the 45-mile carriage road system for bike riding or horse-drawn carriage tours.
Interesting Fact
During certain times of the year Cadillac Mountain is the first place in the U.S. to see sunrise.
Climate
Arrive prepared for a wide variety of weather conditions. Summer temperatures vary from 45º F to 85º F, spring and fall temperatures from 30º F to 70º F. You may encounter rain and fog at any time, and snow and ice are common in the winter.
