You'll want to keep several things in mind when hiking Acadia National Park. First, there's the usual hiking procedures every smart hiker should do, including:  bring plenty of snacks, loads of  water, a durable pair of hiking boots, an extra pair of socks, a map, and camera with extra batteries.  Also remember to know your own limits while hiking and not to exceed them.

The Caribou-Speckled Mountain Wilderness now contains a total of 12,000 acres and is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. All of the wilderness is in the state of Maine.

Public land becomes wilderness through legislation passed by the United States Congress in the form of public laws.

Cross Island NWR is mananged by the Petit Manan NWR complex.

Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1966 in cooperation with the State of Maine to protect valuable salt marshes and estuaries for migratory birds. Scattered along 50 miles of coastline in York and Cumberland counties, the refuge consists of ten divisions between Kittery and Cape Elizabeth. It will contain approximately 7,600 acres when land acquisition is complete.

Moosehorn is one of the northern most national wildlife refuges in the Atlantic Flyway, a migratory route that follows the eastern coast of North America. The refuge provides important

feeding and nesting habitat for many bird species, including waterfowl. Wading birds, shorebirds, upland game birds, songbirds, and birds of prey.

The refuge consists of two divisions. The Baring Division covers 20,016 acres and is located off U.S. Route 1, southwest of Calais. The 8,735 acre Edmunds Division is between Dennysville

Acadia National Park is made up of a cluster of islands encompasses 45,000 acres on the rugged coast of Maine. Acadia National Park is mostly surrounded by the ocean, but it also hosts a wide variety of freshwater, estuarine, forest, and intertidal habitats, and includes the highest point on the U.S. Atlantic coast, Cadillac Mountain, standing at 1,530 feet.
