The Haleakala Wilderness now contains a total of 24,719 acres and is managed by the National Park Service. All of the wilderness is in the state of Hawaii.

Public land becomes wilderness through legislation passed by the United States Congress in the form of public laws. For the Haleakala Wilderness, this process began in 1976 when 19,270 acres were designated by Public Law 94-567.

The Haleakala Wilderness is part of the 106 million acre National Wilderness Preservation System.

The Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge is part of the Pacific Remote Islands National Wildlife Refuge Complex. Established in 1909 by Theodore Roosevelt's Executive Order 1019, the refuge covers the northwestern Hawaiian Islands, with the exception of Midway and Kure Atolls.
