Titus Racer-X Mountain Bike

Titus RacerX Mountain Bike

The Titus racer-x won Bicycling Magazines 2005 mountain bike of the year award. Not much has changed in the award wining design since then. Titus makes this frame is seven different sizes depending on your size and the travel in your fork. They also make the racer-x frame in titanium and carbon (if you have the big bucks). Here's a link to Titus site.

PRO
I can see why this bike has won awards. The guys in the bike shop talked me into this frame over the coarse of a year. They kept telling me this was the best frame for the money... and from what I can tell they were right. The geometry of the bike is amazing. I'm surprised a full suspension bike can climb and corner as well as this bike. Even when riding steep uphills the bike feels like it can keep accelerating (even when I can't). The rear shock, the FOX Float RP3, adds some extra features that I didn't think would be helpful, but they really are. The shock has 3 positions, one is almost a lock-out, the second is for regular x-country riding and the third is for downhill. This comes in really handy if you want to lock out the shock for your trainer or if you have a long smooth uphill and you get a more plush ride when going downhill. I've had the bike for almost a year and a half and I've ridden it hard with no problems. The price will vary greatly on what model and components you build up the bike with. I am very pleased with the standard aluminum model, so unless you need the weight savings I wouldn't pay up for the carbon or ti models.

CONS
I haven't really found any yet.

Play in Rear of Titus Racer X frame

I recently had some play in the titus racer x frame. I thought it was coming from my hub, but it turns out one of the rear Horst pivots was loose (and very dirty). The bike was making a terrible creaking noise whenever I rode uphill. If you have a similar issue check out Titus's website http://www.titusti.com/faqs/index.php?cat=9
