National Geographic Park Profile Books
National Geographic is starting to publish Park Profile books for the National Parks. We've had the opportunity to read these books, that give an exceptional overview of the National Parks and the regions that support them.
National Geographic Park Profile Books
These books are a great resource for learning about the region and culture, inside and outside of the National Parks. I'm an experienced traveler to all these regions, and still found these books very compelling. I've seen may places pictured in these books, but it's cool to put these places in perspective with stories that personalize the experience. I really like reading about the guides that operate in each area. These folks know the land better than anyone, and have countless stories to share about there experiences.
I would use these books to supplement guide books for the region. They don't really point out specific trails or campgrounds, but instead mention individual places as a way to establish perspective on the entire region. In reading these books, you'll get a better understanding of the regions and will make your visit more rewarding, because you'll see the value of these American landscapes.
National Geographic Yellowstone
The Yellowstone Park Profile book covers the entire Greater Yellowstone Eco-system. You'll find stories and pictures of the Wind River Mountains to the south-east of Yellowstone National Park, and the same for Jackson Hole to the south. There are stunning pictures of the Grand Tetons, and countless wildlife pictures.
National Geographic Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon Park Profile book gives firsthand accounts of life in the canyon. You'll see the area from the perspective of river rafters, hikers, guides and Native Americans. This book has some of the most amazing scenery. Redrocks take on so many colors, depending on current weather, season and time of day.
National Geographic Alaska Yellowstone
The Treasures of Alaska books gives a brief overview of all the National Parks and Wildlife Refuges in Alaska. Really each protected area could be it's own book. This book gives a broad view of the culture, wildlife, natural life and recreation you'll find in the state. Until you visit Alaska, it's hard to image the expanse and vastness that's captured in the book. If you're planning your first trip to Alaska, or looking for a new area to visit, this book will provide you with great insight into each region and outdoor activity.
