LLBean Helix Wader and Riverkeeper Wading Boot Review
I test out a number of LL Bean products on a recent Sockeye Salmon fishing trip to our family cabin in Alaska. I've broken the reviews into three parts, the Travel Rod/Mid Arbor Fly Reel, Helix Wader/RiverKeeper Wading Boot and the Gore Tex Pro Shell Wading Jacket/West Branch Fishing Vest. I encourage you to read all these reviews because LL Bean makes fantastic fishing equipment for a very reasonable price... and they have a 100% satisfaction guarantee on all their products.
LL Bean Helix Wader Technology

To be describe the LL Bean Helix wader, I took a picture of the tag. As you can see, only one piece of material is used for either side of the wader. This spiral pattern creates one continues seam on the wader, half as many seams as found on traditional waders. Articulation is built into the fabric instead of being sewn in, further reducing the number of seams that need individual taping. Research has shown that most leaks, occur on the seam of the wader. As you know, seam leaks can be difficult to repair. The fabric of the wader itself is very durable which keeps the wader from getting snagged on branches.
I put a lot of hours on the waders. I fished, cleaned fish, worked around the cabin, climbed in and out of the boat, and walked around the Tundra and had no leaks. Through all this activities I was very comfortable in the waders. They breathe very well when you're moving around, and keep you warm while standing still. The neoprene booties fit snug with a sock underneath and provide ample insulation for the cold water. There's a gravel guard (pictured below) on the wader with tight elastic strap to fit around the top of your boots.
LL Bean Helix Wader Testing

The LL Bean Helix waders have a large front pocket with a watertight zipper on either end. There are small minipockets to hold handwarmers within the main pocket if you're into that. Notice I have my hemostats clamped to the rubber tool holder. The neoprene shoulder straps have a buckle that adjusts easily so you can tighten the straps if you shed a layer. LL Bean has very specific sizing for the Helix. There are three general sizes: Regular, King and Tall; then 5 sizes (s-xxl) within those sizes. This allows for a very customized fit.

LL Bean River Keeper Boots

The LL Bean RiverKeeper Boots were designed for easy cleaning to reduce the transport of aquatic invasives, like Didymo and Whirling Disease. A small brush is included with the boots to keep in your vest. The boots have few seams and are made from materials that dry quickly. LL Bean suggests ordering two sizes large that your street shoe for the best fit. I wear a size 11 and got a size 12 RiverKeeper and they fit perfect, although they were a little tricky to get on.
For only $109, these boots are a screaming deal. I stood comfortably in these boots for up to 10 hours a day. I really like how stiff the upper part of the boot is. This allows for more support while standing and helped me keep my balance in swift water. I took the picture above just before I put these boots into my bag to leave. They still look brand new. They are stylish enough to wear without your waders if you needed to.
LL Bean River Keeper Mud Shedding
In this picture you can see the gravel guard hooked to the boot. Notice the side drainage ports and the rugged eyelets. The boot is surrounded with stiff rubber which helps protect your toes. The RiverKeeper sole consists of AquaStealth rubber. I found the sole provided plenty of traction in the gravel and on the dry dirt path leading up the river bank. The knobs are only 1/8 thick, so if you get into some thick mud you'll loose traction.
