Alpine Trekkers offer a cheaper way to outfit skis with downhill bindings for backcountry skiing. The Alpine Trekkers work very similar to traditional Alpine Touring or Randonee bindings, except they use the existing bindings. On the uphill touring you snap the trekker into the bindings, then strap your boot onto the trekker. For the descent, you remove the trekker from your boot and from the ski, then use the ski just like you would for downhill skiing.
PROS
Alpine Trekkers are much less expensive than AT or Randonee bindings, and you can use them with your current downhill set-up. (you need to get climbing skins of course) If you don’t do a lot of backcountry skiing and/or don’t tour for long periods of time, then the Alpine Trekkers are a good option for you.
CONS
If you’re going to spend time in the backcountry, don’t waste your money on the Alpine Trekkers. Alpine Touring bindings are more expensive than the trekkers, but they are worth the difference in price. The Alpine Trekkers make you ride very high above the ski, which throws off your center of balance. This becomes very tiresome if you’re out on an all day tour.
