Amazing. Insane. Wow. This is the way telemark bindings are headed. It will take time and a lower price, but someday we’ll all probably ride something like these bindings. I can still feel the ski digging into the ice. With this binding, I could carve the ski in a telemark turn, like I carve the ski in an alpine turn with alpine bindings. The first few turns I made, I thought there was something wrong with the binding because it's got so much tension in it. You've really got to slam your knee down. |

What a day in the Wasatch. 3 feet of snow in the last 3 days... And today, blue skies and fresh powder. The avalanche danger was high in the upper elevations, so we stuck to our hidden gem spot in the wasatch foothills. The snow was easily waist deep, but it hasn't had time to consolidate so we hit a few rocks. No damage done. Just some mud on the ends of our ski poles. We signed our names and checked out. |

The Black Diamond Havoc skis like a much larger, heavier ski. I was impressed that a ski could be so light, yet ski so stable. It's solid at high speeds and carves the hard pack. The Havoc skis like most traditional alpine skis, which is rare for a ski described as "backcountry". It's a really stiff ski, so I would recommend using the Havoc with an AT setup, unless you really like to slam it on your tele turns. This would be a great ski to get if you want one ski for touring and the lifts. PROS |

Park City Utah was home to many events during the 2002 Winter Olympics. Park City also hosts the Sundance Film Festival each January. In the winter, you can ski and snowboard at The Canyons or Park City Mountain Resort. You can only ski at Deer Valley Resort. There are a number of cross-country and snowshoeing trails in the nearby mountains. In the Summer, you can find well over one-hundred miles of singletrack mountain biking, hiking and running trails. |

Canyonland National Park preserves a colorful landscape eroded into countless canyons, mesas and buttes by the Colorado River, the Green River and their tributaries. The rivers divide the park into four districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze and the rivers themselves. While these areas share a primitive desert atmosphere, each retains its own character and offers different opportunities for exploration. There are no roads that directly link each district, so getting to each district will take some driving time on paved highways. |

Located just outside of Moab, Utah, on the red cliffs overlooking the Colorado River, Arches National Park is a geologic wonderland. These Arches formed over millions of years of erosion. New arches still being created in the national park today. Arches National Park contains over 2,000 arch formations! |

Is this a trick question? No, there's more depth to it. Why this philosophical challenge? I went skiing a Brighton, Utah a few days ago. I haven't skied there in over ten years. Just arriving in the parking lot brought pack a lot of old memories. It's seems like older you get, the more this nostalgic feeling grips you when you go places you've been before. I can't imagine what it will be like in twenty or thirty years. I guess that why old folks like to tell stories. Back to the question. Why do you Ski? For the Feeling. |

The G3 Reverend was one of Powder Magazines 2007 skiers choice telemark skis. G3 says the Reverends are a powder ski, but I thought they skied well all over the mountain. You get lots of looks on the lift when you have these skis on. It's also pretty wild when you see your ski pop out of the powder and there's a big Reverend staring at you. PROS CONS |

The K2 Work Stinx is one of the most popular tele skis. And for a good reason. It's a great all round ski that you can ski at the resorts and in the backcountry. The K2 rep told me a they sell to a lot of ski patrollers. She also explained that the ski has 2 different radius sidecuts in the front and in the back. The shorter front radius help initiate your turn and the longer radius helps hold the ski in the turn. PROS |

A blue bird day at the top of Big Cottonwood canyon. For the first three Wednesdays in December Brighton is reaching out to benefit local charities. If you're going skiing or snowboarding, and you bring an item(s) for the charity, Brighton gives you a lift ticket for $14. This week was a hat, gloves and/or blanket for the Road Home. Next week is a bag of food for the Utah Food Bank. If you're headed up, be generous. A regular day pass is $54. Thanks Brighton, we enjoyed the day. |

Three plus feet of snow in the cottonwood canyons over the weekend. Finally the rocks and tree stumps are getting buried. Most of the Utah resorts are now open. The snows drove this creature of the woods. |

The Karhu Jak Backcountry is a light weight version of the popular Jak. In order to save weight, without giving up performance, Karhu replaced the Titanal with carbon fiber, and the maple core with Greenlight, an environmentally friendly core. The Jak BC weights nearly a pound less than the regular Jak. The weight savings makes touring a breeze. Click here for my Jak review. PROS |

Over the years, the Karhu Jaks (female version is the Jil)have received numerous awards and raving reviews in magazines, blogs and forums. If you've been lucky enough to ski on them, then you know why. This year's version offers a top sheet of Titanal to help dampen the ski and provide more edge hold on the hard pack. I skied this ski with two different bindings. The first time I skied with the Hammerhead binding, and the second time I skied it with the Rottefella NTN binding. The ski handled much differently with each binding. |

I woke up to four inches of new snow at my house in the Salt Lake Valley. Alta was reporting 8 inches overnight with another 8 plus today... and it was Demo Day. I tried out a number of telemark skis, so check back in the coming days for my reviews. (They will be under the GEAR REVIEW section of nationaloutdoors.net.) |
