New Design for State Pages
As we have continued to develop the look and feel of the National Outdoors website, we ran into a bit of a frustration with how the individual State pages looked.
So, after a bit of effort, we have a new design up and running for the California Outdoors and Oregon Outdoors pages. (Yes, we started on the West Coast and plan to move Eastward, but give us a little time.)
National Get Outdoors Day Locations
There are 41 locations hosting National Get Outdoors Day Events on Saturday, June 14th 2008. Follow this link: http://www.nationalgetoutdoorsday.org/locations/ to see the locations. Many of these sites are located at "outdoor oases" in close proximity to major metropolitan areas. Hopefully there's a National Get Outdoors Day location near you. If not, just get outdoors and enjoy the day!
There's still time to get involved with National Get Outdoors Day. Just contact the site leader (listed on the link above) for more information on how you can partner with them.
What Earth Day Can Accomplish
I think most, if not all, of us that participate in Earth Day know that we are not really saving the Earth on this one day each year. So, then, what does participating in Earth Day accomplish?
The Big Trees
I wrote previously about feeling drawn to the forests, and as I have thought more about it over the past couple weeks I came to realize that what I was really craving was a particular type of deep woods serenity that I have only experienced a few times in the coast range along the Pacific. Well it turns out that this type of forest is actually more rare than I realized.

REI SubKilo +20 Sleeping Bag Review
The REI SubKilo Sleeping Bag gets it’s name from the weight of the bag. It only weighs .91 kilograms or about 2 lbs. As you can see from the picture below, this sleeping bag packs up to be about twice the size of a Nalgene bottle. It’s a little tight around my shoulders (I’m about 6 ft. with a 44” chest), but I expect that with a mummy bag. I got the long version so I have room to curl up in the bag. The standard version of the sleeping bag will fit heights up to 6 feet.
High Sierra Access Backpack Review
The High Sierra Access protects your notebook computer, while providing a comfortable, secure ride with ample storage and features. The pack holds up to a 17” screen size laptop computer with maximum dimensions of 15.5” X 10.75” X 1.8”. In addition to the padded computer sleeve, the Access has special pockets to securely carry your cell phone, iPod, GPS device, beverages and much more.
I tested the High Sierra Access backpack on a recent trip to the Alaskan bush. The weather, terrain and transportation methods put the pack to the test. This pack got the job done.
Crank Brothers Candy Pedals Review
The device that clips into the cleat on your bike shoe resembles an Egg Beater. It’s basically a spring and two arms that extend from the axel of the pedal. Without a lot of mechanical parts, this pedal rarely has any problems. It sheds mud, like no other and allows you to clip onto the pedal with an inch of mud on your shoe. I’ve ridden on these pedals for five years and I’ve never had a problem. I’ve worn out a few sets of cleats, but that’s expected.
The Death March -- Epic Grand Canyon Hike -- Rim to Rim to Rim
The drive out of Flagstaff was cloudy and cool. Unseasonably cool for Memorial Day weekend at the end of May. "Snow at the higher elevations, [of the San Francisco Mountains] up to a foot I hear" said the barista at the coffee shop. As we drove toward the canyon, Sam brought up the Death March, a hike he had dreamed of doing since moving to the southwestern desert 7 years ago. It involved hiking from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, to the North Rim, and back in 24 hours. 44 miles, 20,000 feet of elevation change, 24 hours. Sure, it has been done, but the question was could WE do it.
Chinook Salmon Fishing at Riggins Idaho

Chinook salmon have arrived at Riggins Idaho and along with the salmon so have the salmon anglers. As the salmon are staging at the mouth of the Little Salmon River waiting for the water temperatures to rise before beginning their migration up the Little Salmon anglers are making the most of this opportunity lining the bank and hoping to entice a chinook to their line.
Plunking for Chinook Salmon
As the rivers are running high and muddy salmon fishing is very tough. You may want to try and do some plunking for salmon under these conditions. I received several emails asking just how you would set up to do some plunking for salmon. This technique has been around for years and I thought that every one knew what I was talking about for those of you who didn’t let me explain a little about it.

As National Outdoors was developed, we first focused on creating an outdoors store that would have a depth of outdoor equipment, outdoor gear, and outdoor products that would satisfy the needs of outdoor enthusiasts. We came to realize that providing useful, relevant, and entertaining information about Outdoor Activities and Outdoor Recreation Areas, in addition to the Outdoor Gear Stores and Gear Reviews, was also important.
The approach that we decided to take for National Outdoors was to create an online Outdoor Magazine to organize the large amounts of information on outdoor destinations and pursuits that is out there. The first thing we decided about using an online magazine, or ezine, format was that we didn’t want to just sit at our desks and catalogue all the outdoor recreation areas throughout the country. We really wanted to try a new approach – one that encouraged local experts to share their passion for the outdoors with a broader audience. At the same time, we wanted to provide those same local experts with a chance to promote their services or products in an online outdoors magazine in a way that was effective and easy.
The resulting user-generated content that has been submitted to National Outdoors has been more relevant, timely, and insightful than we could have done ourselves. In exchange for sharing their knowledge of the outdoors, we try to reciprocate in different ways with content providers, often outdoor service providers or retailers. We have initially focused on providing free self-promotion in the outdoor magazine through opportunities such as static links on each post, regionally organized categories, temporary free advertising, and inclusion in the national outdoors directory.
What we have learned is that allowing users to control their own content encourages the information to be more locally focused as opposed to a generic summary written from afar, while the self-promotion ensures that writers remain professional. This mutually beneficial relationship is a powerful tool for smaller outdoor websites.
We haven’t forgotten the other sections of the site in the process; NationalOutdoors.net still provides a unique set of more than twelve outdoors gear stores that cover camping and hiking, outdoor clothing, backpacks and bags, ski equipment, mountain bike equipment, fly fishing gear, kids clothing, car racks, white water and rafting equipment, snowboarding gear, adventure travel products, and also the bargains and deals available on all these products.
This list may seem ridiculous, but imagine what it was like for us to have to narrow down over thirty thousand outdoor products to this relatively small list of outdoors gear. The different outdoors stores that you will find on this site will provide a tremendous amount of information about the varied outdoor equipment that is available and they each are powered by a highly respectable outdoor equipment retailer.
The most powerful way to use these gear stores is to search all the outdoors products at once through our search box. (Just be sure to use highly specific terms for the outdoor gear that you are looking for to ensure the best results for comparison.)
Please enjoy, and don't forget to come back and share your passion for the outdoors with all the other visitors to National Outdoors.
